A Seattle couple has been reunited with their dog named Sammy six days after the Black Labrador mix was presumed dead when their home collapsed in a landslide.
James and Didi Fritts started to feel some hope about their three-year-old canine’s chances of survival when they and their neighbours heard whimpering from beneath the rubble, according to KING 5 TV news.
“We (heard) a little cry this morning, and then didn’t hear anything when the fire department was here with the chainsaws,” family friend and neighbour Remy Olivier told the station.
The Seattle Fire Department spent hours removing debris and bulldozing their way to the living room, where Sammy was last seen,
The dog, a bit dehydrated but in stable condition, licked her owner’s face when they were finally reunited and Didi Fritts said: “It’s mommy!”
“We took apart the entire floor, pulled her out and she had just enough room to survive so she wasn’t crushed … I guess she was surviving on rain water the past couple days,” Oliver said to KING 5 TV.
Sammy was found next to her sister Lilli, who died in the mud and debris, according to the Seattle Times.
James was trapped inside the home during the landslide and rescued while Didi escaped on her own according to the newspaper.
