Of the 7,102 of Crime Stoppers tips received in 2021, eight solved homicide cases, which was a 100% increase over 2020. 18 tips lead to recovering illegal firearms, there was a 57% increase in tip-related arrests, a 212% increase in tip-related charges and a 260% increase in tip-related property seized.

Toronto Crime Stoppers won’t give information on what crimes or murders have been solved through tips.

“Our biggest hurdle when it comes to talking about crimes that have been solved is we could identify the tipster,” said Sean Sportun, chairman of Toronto Crime Stoppers.

Toronto Crime Stoppers is a valuable partner for the Toronto police,” said Chief of Police James Ramer.

“Every year this program is responsible for processing thousands of tips that help our investigators make arrests, lay charges, and seize firearms, stolen property and illicit drugs. By building trust with the public and encouraging donations that are re-invested back into our neighbourhoods, our communities are safer because of Toronto Crime Stoppers,” Ramer said.

Mayor John Tory says Toronto’s Crime Stoppers program is the most successful in the world.

“Community safety really is a shared responsibility and the citizens of this great city help Crime Stoppers every single year to do their part. Programs and initiatives based on trusted partnerships between the police and the community are the future of this city and we are fortunate to have the Toronto Crime Stoppers program leading the way,” Tory said.

Toronto Crime Stoppers will stay resilient to combat crime issues across the city Sportun, said.

“The success of our program, seeing record setting statistics from 2021, is a testament to the community we serve that empowers a movement of a crime free Toronto,” Sportun said.

It’s not clear why the pandemic 2021 year was so successful for Toronto Crime Stoppers.

“Maybe while people were staying at home they saw more things,” said Sportun

“The tips we were getting were quality over quantity.”

In 2019, Toronto Crime Stoppers rebranded and ended paying individual tipsters for information and shifted to funding community engagement funding.
