The city recorded its 85th murder of 2021 on New Year’s Eve when a woman was stabbed to death in the west end.
Toronto Police say the victim was found fatally stabbed in an apartment near Weston Rd. and Dennis Ave. — south of Eglinton Ave. W. — around 11 a.m. on Friday.
The dead woman has been identified as Elsabet Yitayew, 37, of Toronto.
“A woman was arrested at the scene,” Homicide det. Michael McGinn said in a statement released Friday.
Temeka Dorsett, 32, of Toronto, is charged with first-degree murder.
The accused was expected to make a virtual appearance at Old City Hall court on Saturday.
The 85 murders recorded in Toronto in 2021 is the city’s fourth-deadliest year on record for killings.
The all-time record was set in 2018 with 97, which included 11 victims killed in the Yonge St. van attack.
In 1991, there were 89 murders And there were 86 homicides in 2007.
