Abdulmoaize Popal, 23, was gunned down in Scarborough in hail of bullets
A 23-year-old man has been identified as the victim of Tuesday night’s deadly drive-by shooting outside a Scarborough apartment complex.
Toronto Police say Abdulmoaize Popal was gunned down in a hail of bullets outside 3945 Lawrence Ave. E. — near Orton Park Rd. — just after 10 p.m.
The Ajax man collapsed just outside the front door of a lowrise apartment building.
At least three people who live in surrounding buildings rushed out to try to help Popal, but he was ultimately pronounced dead at the scene.
As part of their investigation, Homicide investigators have released an image of a vehicle seen fleeing the area north on Orton Park Rd. after the murder
Police described the suspect vehicle as a light-coloured SUV, believed to be a Subaru.
Investigators are appealing to anyone who witnessed the shooting or was in the area at the time and has video footage to come forward.
Members of one petrified family with four children described Wednesday what it was like to have two bullets smashing through their kitchen window and whizzing into walls of their apartment.
“I’m just thankful that nobody got hit,” a boy, 17, told the Sun, while standing in his family’s kitchen near two big bullet holes.
Another woman – fearful of the deadly violence – said she was traumatized by what she saw after going outside to try to help the gravely injured Popal before police arrived.
“I saw the guy,” she said. “There was no way you could do CPR on him.”
The woman also said she believes Popal — the city’s 77th murder victim of the year — had relatives residing nearby.
She described hearing a barrage of gunshots ring out.
“Right now I am afraid because you never know what’s going to happen now,” she said.
The apartment building Popal collapsed in front of had at least four visible signs of gunfire.
Along with two holes in an apartment window, there was also a bullet hole in a window beside the main door.
