Socialite Ghislaine Maxwell, her lawyers, family and coterie of supporters have unleashed a massive public relations campaign in the run-up to her sex trafficking trial.
On Tuesday, CBS This Morning ran interviews with her sister, brother and security consultant who claimed that the 59-year-old one-time British “it girl” is sitting in as a proxy for the sinister sex crimes of her longtime pal and paramour, billionaire Jeffrey Epstein.
But before Epstein could be put in the dock to answer for his multitude of alleged sex crimes involving underage girls, he hanged himself in his New York jail cell while awaiting trial in August 2019.
Jury selection is underway for Maxwell’s trial that is slated to begin in New York City on Nov. 29. She has pleaded not guilty and denies any wrongdoing.
“The picture that is painted of my sister is 1000 degrees away from the person that I know. She’s innocent and has our love and support,” her sister, Isabel Maxwell, told the program.
Older brother Ian Maxwell was steadfast in his support of the accused sex trafficker.
“I am extremely relieved that neither of my parents are alive to see it because they would have been profoundly shocked,” he said. “[To the accusers] can you look me in the eye and tell me honestly that Ghislaine Maxwell was responsible for your abuse? Or was it Jeffrey Epstein, really, who should be here?”
Her brother admitted that in the war of public opinion, his little sister is losing big. He added that he believes she’s only in jail now because Epstein killed himself before a trial could be held.
“I can’t think of anyone other than Ghislaine’s friends and family who are wishing Ghislaine well right now. That’s not the narrative.”
“They lost him [Epstein] so there has to be somebody to pay the price, a patsy,” added Ian Maxwell. “Ghislaine is paying that price and she’s paying it every day. She’s now spent more time in jail than Jeffrey Epstein himself spent himself in jail. Now, how can that be correct?”
However, despite his support, he revealed he was unaware the woman called “Epstein’s pimp” was married until after she was arrested in July 2020.
The show also interviewed her security advisor who revealed the great lengths he went to keep the willowy brunette away from the media.
Max Hellier said the purpose of the cat and mouse game was to avoid the press, not the cops.
“We’d never stay in one place for any length of time. She’s the most hunted lady in the U.S., in fact the world, but she needed to get out,” Hellier said, adding that a photo of Maxwell at an LA burger joint quickly hit the press.
So, his team put out a story that Maxwell was hiding with her other brother, Kevin, in France. It was a gambit to throw the tabloids off her scent.
“We put two people who looked like Ghislaine and Kevin together in the public eye in a well-known street in Paris,” Hellier said, adding that his client later bought a remote mansion in New Hampshire until the feds found her.
