SIU invokes mandate after fatal overnight Brampton crash

Dixie and Sandalwood remain closed as police investigate

Police are keeping tight-lipped about a serious overnight crash in Brampton that prompted the involvement of Ontario’s police watchdog.

While details are scarce, the two-vehicle crash happened at around 2:45 a.m. after an OPP member attempted a traffic stop near Dixie Rd. and Sandalwood Pkwy. E.

The suspect vehicle fled and collided with a second at the intersection. 

A tweet by Ontario Provincial Police Sergeant Kerry Schmidt said the collision is being investigated by Peel Regional Police, and the Special Investigations Unit has invoked their mandate.

Two people were seriously hurt in the crash, with one succumbing to their injuries.

Information on the crash or the identity of the victims have not been released.

Witnesses are asked to contact the Special Investigations Unit at 1-800-787-8529, or upload any dash camera footage on the the SIU website .
