Homicide Det. Mike McGinn said on Thursday morning police responded to a radio call for unknown trouble and found a car had crashed into a townhouse and the driver was unresponsive.

It was soon determined that James had been shot, but McGinn wouldn’t say where or how many times.

“Life-saving efforts were performed, but he died of gunshot wounds at Sunnybrook (hospital),” McGinn said at 42 Division.

Police wouldn’t say where the location was where James was shot or how many times.

“It’s very early in the investigation,” he said.

It is also unclear how many suspects could be involved and police are canvassing for video surveillance.

“I couldn’t say if this was gang-related,” McGinn said.

Earlier in the day James’ uncle, Stephen Clements, was at the crime scene.

“I don’t know why he was shot. He wasn’t in a gang. He didn’t deserve this,” Clements said.

We apologize, but this video has failed to load.

He said James had taken business administration courses and opened up a tattoo parlour two years ago and had two sisters.

“I got two tattoos from him,” Clements said.
