The Rogers saga which has been playing out in newspapers, on TV and elsewhere has mostly consisted of family members and the company issuing statements through lawyers or PR firms.

One family member, though, is taking a more direct approach as Martha Rogers airs her grievances on Twitter.

Martha is the daughter of Rogers Communications founder Ted Rogers and his wife Loretta. Martha and her mother, along with sister Melinda Rogers-Hixon, are engaged in a legal battle for control of the company.

Rather than issuing staid statements, Martha has been taking direct aim at her brother Ed online, accusing him of throwing tantrums.

Last week as the story took hold in the public’s imagination, Martha said she and the rest of the family would fight her brother no matter what it took.

“We’ll spend every penny defending the company, employees & Ted’s wishes, nothing you can do will deter us. Bring. It. On,” she tweeted Oct. 23.

When Ed Rogers appointed himself as Chair of Rogers Communications after the board had ousted him, Martha mocked him.

We apologize, but this video has failed to load.

“I see Ed has appointed himself the Chairman. LOL. This should be taken as seriously as if he appointed himself the King of England,” she tweeted.

Martha also clearly doesn’t like that the media have declared this a family battle; she calls it a coup.

“When did stopping an attempted coup get redefined as a family feud? If a non-family member pulled the coup, what would you call it then? Asking for a friend,” she tweeted on Oct. 25.

In response to an Oct. 26 op-ed in the National Post by Robert Brehl, the author who helped write the memoirs of Ted Rogers, Martha said “Ted knew what is son was.” That was a pointed reference to how Ted Rogers structured the company and family trust before his death.
