A 15-year-old Sunderland boy was killed and six other young teenagers injured when a pickup truck rolled over north of the city early Sunday.
Durham Regional Police say seven kids – aged 15 to 17 – were in the Chevrolet Sierra pickup when it crashed on Sideline Rd. 18 near Brock Concession rd. 9, in the Township of Brock, around 12:40 a.m.
“(The 16-year-old Sunderland girl driving the pickup) lost control, left the roadway and rolled into a ditch,” Det.-Const. Brett Rayne said in a statement released Sunday. “Four of the occupants were ejected during the rollover.”
“One of the occupants, a 15-year-old male from Sunderland was fatally injured as a result of the collision,” he added.
Rayne said the six other occupants were transported to local hospitals and later airlifted to trauma centers in Toronto.
“Two are currently listed in critical condition, the other four are now listed in serious but stable condition,” he said.
A few hours later, around 4:10 a.m., Rayne said a male driver was killed when his vehicle smashed into a tree “at a high rate of speed” and burst into flames on Howden Rd. – near Harmony Rd. — in Oshawa.
“Officers attended the area and discovered a blue 2021 Honda Civic damaged against a tree and fully engulfed by fire,” he said. “The vehicle’s lone occupant and driver remained inside the vehicle was pronounced at the scene.”
Investigators were not immediately able to confirm the identity of the driver.
