Arrest made in fatal hit-and-run

Toronto police have made a second arrest in a fatal hit and run last week.

Police were called on Friday, Oct. 15, over the noon-hour for reports of a crash at Burnhamthorpe Rd. and Shaver Ave., just west of Martin Grove.

According to police,  a gold Pontiac minivan and a black sedan were both travelling westbound along Burnhamthorpe at high speeds.

A Honda SUV, driven by a 59-year-old man, was entering the intersection at Shaver Ave. when it was struck by the gold minivan, while the black sedan slowed but ended up fleeing the scene.

The driver of the Honda was killed instantly in the crash.

The driver of the minivan was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries, where he was arrested.

Fifty-year-old Samir Shams of Toronto is charged with dangerous operation of a conveyance causing death.
