Two dead, three injured as train collides with van north of Toronto

Two women were killed and three other people injured when a van was struck by a train north of the city Thursday night.

Ontario Provincial Police say the deadly collision happened shortly after 11 p.m. in New Tecumseth in Simcoe County — west of Newmarket.

Emergency crews responded to the scene on 5th Line and immediately began working on extracting the five occupants from the van.

One woman was confirmed dead at the scene and four others were sent to a Toronto trauma centre suffering serious injuries.

One of the four, a woman, succumbed to her injuries at the hospital.

Police have not yet released the identities of the deceased.

The OPP technical traffic collision investigators were at the scene.

The investigation is ongoing to determine the cause of the crash, why the vehicle was on the tracks, and if any charges will be laid.
