The province’s Special Investigations Unit is investigating two separate deaths Saturday involving Toronto police.
In the first instance, officers responded to a Church St. residence around 11:30 p.m. for reports of a 34-year-old man armed with a gun.
When authorities arrived, the man had barricaded himself in the unit.
Police found the man in medical distress upon entering the unit, and died a short time later.
In the second instance, Toronto Police responded to a residence on Castledene Cres. in Scarborough that same evening around 7:27 p.m. for an unknown trouble call.
A police negotiator made contact with the man, who reportedly sustained a serious injury and was given first aid until paramedics arrived.
The man was taken to hospital where he died.
In both cases, four investigators and two forensic investigators have been assigned.
Post-mortems are scheduled for Monday.
Anyone who may have information about either incident is asked to contact the SIU at 1-800-787-8529, and those with video evidence are asked to submit their footage through the SIU website.
The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person.
