Neighbours say couple lived in apartment complex for about a year
Police took a woman into custody after a stabbing claimed the life of a man in the east end.
Toronto Police received a call about an altercation in an apartment on Coxwell Ave. — near Gerrard St. — around 4 a.m. on Sunday.
When officers arrived, they found a man suffering from serious injuries.
Emergency personnel rushed him to hospital, but his condition “deteriorated” and he died from his injuries, said police.
A woman was taken into custody and homicide detectives offered assurances there was no further threat in the area.
Some people who live in 48-unit building had gathered and talked about what happened.
“The building was like swarmed with police,” said one resident, who added she had been texting earlier Saturday with the woman who was arrested.
They live on the same floor but at opposite ends.
“I was just texting with her this morning, asking ‘Why are the police knocking at everyone’s door?” said the woman, who did not wish to be identified.
She said the woman and the victim had been living together in the building “for maybe like a year or something like that.“
She also saw the couple earlier Saturday evening smoking on a wooden bench outside the front door of the building.
“We’ve hung out,” she said.
Another man leaving the building Sunday said police had been canvassing residents for any information.
“They knocked on the door at 9 a.m.,” said the man who also didn’t wish to give his name. “They just said, ‘Did you see anything?’”
Another woman entering Sunday afternoon learned of the overnight killing as she arrived.
“Homicide? Like he’s dead?” asked the woman who would not give her name. “Are you serious? They are my neighbours.”
“I just heard. Wow, that’s surprising,” she said. “She’s like a neighbour. I see her, but I am not good friends with her.”
Police have not released the names of the victim or the woman in custody.
