Police announce arrests, release footage of million dollar gunpoint heist

After watching surveillance video of a robbery where gun-toting thieves hauled off over a million dollars in cash, it’s clear why Toronto police dubbed their investigation Project Heavy Bag.

One of the weight-room adverse perpetrators can be seen in the video struggling mightily to drag and lift one of the cash-laden bags to an awaiting getaway vehicle.

Eventually the bag tears open, and bundles of cash litter the ground.

On Tuesday, Toronto police releasing the dramatic robbery footage and announced several arrests in the investigation.

The heist took place on April 1, 2021 at a retail location in Carlingview Drive and Dixon Road area. Police say two men forced two employees at gunpoint to give them access to a room with multiple safes.

The victims were ordered to the ground while the suspects loaded garbage bags with more than one million dollars. They then fled in an awaiting vehicle.

Things began to unravel when it appears someone to tried to rob the thieves. Police say on May 17, 2021, an attempted home invasion took place in the Kipling and Steeles avenues area.

Armed suspects tried to enter a unit, but fled before police arrived.

During their investigation of that attempted break-in, police said they found money from the original retail robbery inside the unit being targetted, and were able to identify several suspects.

Police have since arrested three men and four women in connection to the million dollar stick-up. They are facing a barrage of serious gun and robbery charges.

One suspect remains at large.

Emmanuel Rawson, 22, of Toronto (pictured below), is wanted for a variety of charges including robbery with a firearm and disguise with intent.

He’s described as five foot seven, 190 pounds and police say he should be considered armed and dangerous.
