While Det.-Const. Scott Matthews said Monday that number is problematically high, it’s still lower than the previous weekend when there were more than 20 arrests.

“I think last weekend (before this one) was 23, and I think the weekend before was around 19,” added Matthews.

“People aren’t getting the message that drinking and driving isn’t acceptable. This summer, from about August, it started getting weird. It started going really high. What it takes is education, enforcement, and citizens just calling 911 when you see an impaired driver.”

Among those arrested this past weekend, one driver was actually seen throwing beer cans out the window.

“It was a 911 call for a driver driving erratically,” said Matthews. “And then the witness saw the gentleman throwing beer cans out his window. When police arrived on scene, he was actually outside of his car trying to collect these beer cans again.”
