In a story first reported by the Toronto Sun, newly elected Calgary-Skyview MP George Chahal was caught on a resident’s doorbell camera the night before election day, allegedly removing Conservative incumbent Jag Sahota’s flyer and replacing it with one of his own.

Calgary Police spokesperson Tanja McMorris confirmed Friday that the matter is now the subject of a police investigation.

“We can confirm that the incident has been reported, and we will begin an investigation,” she told the Sun.

The matter is before the service’s anti-corruption unit.

Chahal campaign manager Randall Zalazar admitted to the Sun earlier this week that Chahal did indeed take a flyer, claiming he did so because it contained “incorrect polling information.”

Glenn Pennett, who owns the home in question, said it was the pamphlet left by Chahal that carried incorrect polling information — directing him to vote at a non-existent polling station in the neighbourhood of Coventry Hills, more than 15 km away from his home in the northeast Calgary neighbourhood of Temple.

Zalazar declined to tell the Sun whose flyer Chahal allegedly removed, but Pennett said it belonged to Sahota.

Chahal, a single-term Calgary city councillor, won the only seat for the Liberals in the city, unseating Sahota by a little more than 3,000 votes.

Sahota told the Sun on Wednesday she was ‘shocked’ and ‘disappointed’ with the video, saying she expected her opponents to carry out clean and ethical campaigns.

“If you watch the video, he made no attempt to look at the pamphlet,” she said.

We apologize, but this video has failed to load.

A spokesperson for the Commissioner of Canada Elections, responsible for enforcing the Canada Elections Act, said they don’t comment publicly on complaints or investigations, but did say the Act prohibits anybody from “impairing or preventing the transmission of election advertising.”

Both the Liberal Party and Conservative Party have been contacted for comment.
