Ontarians painting the town green in first stage of reopening

A new report shows as Ontario entered Phase One of reopening last Friday and the province got back to some sort of normalcy, people got out and about and spent money.

Payment processing company Moneris says a 33% overall increase in transaction payment volumes since June 11 when people started to get out.

The company data shows there was a 43% increase in spending at restaurant and a 43% increase at non-essential retailers.

The biggest spenders were in Toronto where there was a 77% increase in restaurant spending in the province.

In Halton, retail sales were up 70% and overall spending at gyms and fitness centres were up 17%.

There were significant overall increases in spending in hotels such as in Hamilton which has seen an increase of 139% and in Niagara Falls which saw an increase of 124% as it was the first weekend for a getaway.

Overall, Durham had an overall spending of 33%, Halton had 56%, Toronto had 33%, York had 31% and Peel had 24%.
