Mike Stafford is gone as a longtime radio host at AM640, Global News Radio’s flagship morning show.
“I can confirm that Mike Stafford is no longer with 640,” a spokesperson for CORUS, Global’s parent company, said in a statement to The Sun Friday. “We can’t provide any further details due to confidentially reasons.”
However, the reason, as reported by VICE World News, is that Stafford, who worked at the station since 2001, used a racist word during a co-worker chat on the digital workplace platform Microsoft Teams and was fired.
The conversation had to do with Ontario Premier Doug Ford speaking about border security and the dangers of the Delta variant, or what he called the “Indian variant,” of COVID-19 during a June 2 press conference.
“I had $5 at home that he’d slip and call it the ‘P–i’ variant,” said Stafford in the group chat as photoshopped and sent to VICE World News.
Stafford later told VICE World News in a text exchange he was treating the premier and his “pathetic border argument” with disgust.
However, he admitted the term is a racial slur, telling VICE World News: “Ford and I grew up in the same era, I only meant to exchange what he was thinking. Which is why it was in quotes.”
