The Ford Escort Prince Charles gave Princess Diana as an engagement gift is set to go under the hammer.

The anonymous owner of the 1.6 litre Mk III Ghia, a self-confessed Princess Diana superfan, has driven the motor for two decades and describes it as an “excellent little runner.”

The car is expected to fetch an estimated US$56,600 at a sale planned by Essex, England auction house Reeman Dansie on June 29.

Auction house spokesman Lewis Rabett tells Britain’s The Sun the current owner didn’t offer up details of the car’s royal links when she initially handed over the deeds and keys.

“Obviously it is a humble Ford Escort but who its first owner was takes this car to a whole other level,” he says. “The vendor has been very coy about the true history of the car. She didn’t let on that it used to be Princess Diana’s car. I think she quite liked the fact that she was the only one who knew about it.

We apologize, but this video has failed to load.

“The car has spent most of its life in a garage and is in very good condition for a car of that age and is in full working order. Diana didn’t have it for very long.”

The late royal drove the car between May 1981 and August,1982.
